Caribbean Culinary Delights, King Yellow Man, Singing Francine & Elan Trotman Headline Hartford’s 2017 Taste of the Caribbean and Jerk Festival
HARTFORD, CT – July 11, 2017 – The Twelfth Annual Taste of the Caribbean and Jerk Festival, which showcases Greater Hartford’s vibrant Caribbean Community, will be held at the Mortensen Riverfront Plaza, Downtown Hartford, on Saturday, August 5, from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The event will kick off with an opening flag ceremony by Curet Boys Scout Troop 1443. During the course of the festival, attendees will be entertained by live music headlined by King Yellow Man & Sagittarius Band, Barbadian Jazz Saxophonist, Elan Trotman, Calypsonian Singing Francine, New Release Band, Los Calientes – Nelson Bello – Spanish Band and Gospel performances by Gwen Douglas. Other entertainers include: Hartford Steel Symphony, Amandla Band, The Caribbean American Dance Company, D’Tay – Haitian Band and The St. Lucian Folk Singers. Connecticut-based artists will include Sledge, Iyaphonso, Dorette Sterling, Friendz World Music, and Ardie Wallace. In addition, Connecticut International Caribbean Cultural Carnival Association (CICCA) will present a Mini Carnival Parade, including the celebrated Stilt Walkers.
Several MC’s will be on hand, including Glenda Gee, Philip Duncan, DJ Lisa, Delingo, Lady Diamond and Donovan Longmore, to introduce the various performances. Recorded Music will be provided by DJs Big O and John Percy.
A wide assortment of delectable dishes, which are representative of the Caribbean diaspora, will be available for purchase. Tickets for the annual raffle will be also be on sale during the Festival, the proceeds are part of the fundraising activities of the Taste of the Caribbean Arts and Culture Inc., the organization that originated the Jerk Festival.
This year, the Children’s Village will showcase activities that include Caribbean games, Grace Wright, storytelling, free face painting (courtesy of Impressions of Style), Child Identification Kit (courtesy of New York Life), and our fourth annual Children’s Open Mic Competition.
This signature family-oriented event, produced by Taste of the Caribbean Arts & Culture Inc., with support from Caribbean American Young Adults Social and Civic Organization (CAYASCO), promotes cultural diversity, fosters community pride and burnishes the image of an economically vibrant City.
